TRUE POWER COMES FROM THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL RELATIONSHIPS

Today’s Scripture Readings: Psalm 133:1-2; Luke 10:27

Psalm 133:1-2 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments.”

Luke 10:27 “So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

A person's love for God must show itself in love for people, but for it to be genuine we must first have a personal relationship with God. Precious saints the Christian life is based on a personal relationship with the living God, whose ultimate desire is to be known by us as we are known by Him. See you must create a personal relationship with God especially in your private life, otherwise if done in the public alone it is only dead religion. If you do not know how to create a personal relationship with God, your spiritual life will be easily influenced by this world and all its trappings. There is a time to pray alone and there is a time to come pray with other members of the body of Christ. For when this is combined with private and public together in our weekly lives, you will see the supernatural grace upon your life precious saints. God wants to know you personally in the secret place along with in gathering with others corporately. You will flow in all dimensions if you build a relationship with God at home and in gathering with others – this brings about a double anointing.

See God reveals His heart, His thoughts, and His purpose to those who work in friendship with Him and love Him first. Our God has an incredible desire to reveal Himself. The apostle Paul describes it best to the Corinthians that the Holy Spirit is sent to reveal the very plan and thought of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10 “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

We also see that in the book of John that the meaning of external life is knowing God.

John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

Therefore, it should not surprise us to see revival accompanied also by demonstration of the power and glory of God who desires us to know Him more and set us ablaze with holy passion. Those who think God has become quiet over the years or that God has retreated behind the clouds until the return of Jesus, really do not understand the passion God has for drawing people to Himself. He desires to pour out His Spirit upon all flesh to see revival precious saints. He desires for you to have encounters with Him that He may show you great and mighty things you have not seen before through the revelation of His glory. What do we mean by the glory of God? Well, there is a weighty shekinah cloud of glory and ultimately it is the goodness of God. Example just for you to be able to breath today, that is the goodness and glory of God. If you have seen the goodness of God in front of you, you have seen the glory of God precious saints and when we have been comforted by God, we then can truly comfort us with the Fathers love.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any [a]trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

So, reach out to the Lord today and cry out for more of God’s glory and goodness in your life precious saints, for it is time for revival in the nations.

SERVANTS OF GOD THAT PURSUE GOD OF REVIVAL

One principle that is behind every revival will be the pastor and other church leaders who are supportive of it. The pastor and other church leaders will not just say a revival would be nice, but they will throw all their resources behind the effort to see God’s showers of blessing come. They want to see it happen. They mention it frequently in sermons. They will ensure prayer is engaged for it to materialize, and they anticipate its arrival.

On the other hand, if a pastor isn’t in Favor of revival, and they are content with the way things are, you can be sure they will block every way of the revival taking place within their influence.

Every revivalist during the last few hundred years has had their largest battles not with antagonistic atheists or Satanists, but with pastors who were so arrogant and self-righteous that they opposed every revival from being ignited.

Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, John Wesley, Charles G. Finney, Evan Roberts, Duncan Campbell, and many others, were habitually hampered in their work because of pastors who would oppose and criticize their efforts. Those opposing pastors would use their influence to generate opposition among other pastors as well. Let us not be on the wrong side of history when it comes to quenching a move of the Spirit precious saints and especially this close to the Lords coming.

TODAY'S REVIVAL STORY

19792-1875 – CHARLES FINNEY PASSIONATE REVIVALIST PREACHER

CHARLES FINNEY THE GREAT REVIVALIST OF THE SECOND AWAKENING

Charles Finney (1792-1875) became well known in revivals in the nineteenth century. A keen sportsman and young lawyer, he had a mighty empowering by God’s Spirit on the night of his conversion on Wednesday 10 October 1821. That morning the Holy Spirit convicted him on his way to work. So he spent the morning in the woods near his small town of Adams in New York State, praying. There he surrendered fully to God. He walked to his law office that afternoon profoundly changed and in the afternoon assisted his employer Squire Wright to set up a new office. That night he was filled with the Spirit. He describes that momentous night in his autobiography:

CHARLES FINNEY CONVERSION TESTIMONY

“The rising of my soul was so great that I rushed into the room back of the front office to pray. There was no fire and no light in this back room; nevertheless, it appeared to me as if it were perfectly light. As I went in and shut the door after me, it seemed to me as if I met the Lord Jesus Christ face to face. It seemed to me that I saw him as I would see any other man. He said nothing but looked at me in such a manner as to break me right down at his feet. It seemed to me a reality that he stood before me, and I fell down at his feet and poured out my soul to him. I wept aloud like a child and made such confession as I could with my choked words. It seemed to me that I bathed his feet with my tears, and yet I had no distinct impression that I touched him.

“I must have continued in this state for a good while, but my mind was too much absorbed with the interview to remember anything that I said. As soon as my mind became calm enough I returned to the front office and found that the fire I had made of large wood was nearly burned out. But as I turned and was about to take a seat by the fire, I received a mighty baptism of the Holy Spirit. Without any expectation of it, without ever having the thought in my mind that there was any such thing for me, without any memory of ever hearing the thing mentioned by any person in the world, the Holy Spirit descended upon me in a manner that seemed to go through me, body and soul. I could feel the impression, like a wave of electricity, going through and through me. Indeed it seemed to come in waves of liquid love, for I could not express it in any other way. It seemed like the very breath of God. I can remember distinctly that it seemed to fan me, like immense wings.

“No words can express the wonderful love that was spread abroad in my heart. I wept aloud with joy and love. I literally bellowed out the unspeakable overflow of my heart. These waves came over me, and over me, and over me, one after another, until I remember crying out, ‘I shall die if these waves continue to pass over me.’ I said, ‘Lord, I cannot bear any more,’ yet I had no fear of death.”

That night a member of the church choir which Finney led called in at his office, amazed to find the former sceptic in a “state of loud weeping” and unable to talk to him for some time. That young friend left and soon returned with an elder from the church who was usually serious and rarely laughed. “When he came in,” Finney observed, “I was very much in the state in which I was when the young man went out to call him. He asked me how I felt, and I began to tell him. Instead of saying anything he fell into a most spasmodic laughter. It seemed as if it was impossible for him to keep from laughing from the very bottom of his heart.”

Next morning, with “the renewal of these mighty waves of love and salvation” flowing through him, Finney witnessed to his employer who was strongly convicted and later made his peace with God.

That morning a deacon from the church came to see Finney about a court case due to be tried at ten o’clock. Finney told him he would have to find another lawyer, saying, “I have a retainer from the Lord Jesus Christ to plead his cause and I cannot plead yours.” The astonished deacon later became more serious about God and settled his case privately.

CHARLES FINNEY WENT ON TO MINISTER FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE

Charles Finney continued for the rest of his life in evangelism and revival. During the height of the revivals, he often saw the awesome holiness of God come upon people, not only in meetings but also in the community, bringing multitudes to repentance and conversion. Wherever he travelled, instead of bringing a song leader he brought someone to pray. Often Father Nash, his companion, was not even in the meetings but in the woods praying. Finney founded and taught theology at Oberlin College which pioneered co-education and enrolled both blacks and whites. His Lectures on Revival were widely read and helped to fan revival fire in America and England.

Finney emphasized Hosea 10:12, “Break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord till He comes and rains righteousness on you.” He believed that if we do our part in repentance and prayer, God will do his in sending revival. Now for those that joined the three day fasting of March, will know that the intercessory prayer of Daniel (Father) Nash was so vital for this revival to be made possible. Feel free to reference back that that study on Day two of the fasting program.

He preached in Boston for over a year during the revival in 1858-1859. Many reports tell of the power of God producing conviction in people not even in the meetings. At times people would repent as they sailed into Boston harbour, convicted by the Holy Spirit.

Various revival movements influenced society in the nineteenth century but 1858 in America and 1859 in Britain were outstanding. Typically, it followed a low ebb of spiritual life. Concerned Christians began praying earnestly and anticipating a new move of God’s Spirit.

1815-1840 UPSTATE NEW YORK REVIVALS

I want us to look a little deeper into the impact that Charles Finney made in the state of New York that experienced revival between 1815 – 1840. There were undoubtedly many more!

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE INITIAL STAGES OF REVIVAL

►Because revivals are contagious, the revivals that began in upstate New York, beginning around 1815, were an overflow of the New England Revivals that had started in Connecticut in 1797. There were similar outbreaks of revival that were taking place in Kentucky at the same time, at Red River / Gasper River and Cane Ridge. All of these were considered as the beginning of the Second Great Awakening, which eventually overspread the entire nation.

►Asahel Nettleton was a product of the revival that took place in Killingworth, Connecticut in 1801-1802. He became an influential revivalist who is credited with having converted 30,000 to Christ. He conducted ministry in a number of upstate New York towns from 1816-1819. During that time the Methodist churches alone reported 2,700 people were added to their membership rolls.

►By July 1819, Nettleton was exhausted and went to Saratoga Springs, New York to rest. Instead of resting, however, he found himself once again engaged in ministry in that area. The following brief excerpt from his Memoirs (pg. 94-98) gives a glimpse into how extensive the revival was spreading:

• The scene is beyond description. Did you ever witness two hundred sinners, with one accord in one place, weeping for their sins. Until you have seen this, you can have no adequate conceptions of the solemn scene. I felt as though I was standing on the verge of the eternal world; while the floor under my feet was shaken by the trembling of anxious souls in view of a judgment to come.

• Within a circle whose diameter would be twenty-four miles [around Union College, NY], not less than eight hundred souls have been hopefully born into the kingdom of Christ since last September.

• This revival, which commenced at Saratoga Springs [New York], and spread into the surrounding region, resulted in the hopeful conversion of not less than two thousand souls.

• The same glorious work is spreading fast into other towns and congregations.

GROWTH OF DENOMINATIONS DURING THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

►Charles Finney is perhaps the most renowned evangelist in the history of the Church. He started out as a lawyer, but after his extraordinary conversion to Christ on October 10, 1821, he abandoned that profession for evangelistic ministry in 1824.

►Finney was credited with adding fuel to the already burning revivals in New York, and his ministry gave another 15 years of forward momentum to the Second Great Awakening that was blanketing the United States.

►The term “Burned-Over District” was used by Charles Finney to describe the areas in New York that had experienced so many revivals that there were no more fuel, or unconverted people, left to evangelize.

EXAMPLES OF JUST SOME OF THE RESULTS FROM OF CHARLES FINNEY MINISTRY

• Rome, New York – 500 converts

• Utica, New York – 500 converts, and 1,000 added to the membership rolls of churches in the surrounding area.

• Rochester, New York – Finney claimed that because of his Sept. 1830 – March 1831 revival in Rochester, revivals broke out in 1,500 towns and villages, adding 100,000 persons to the churches nationwide.

►Though controversial at the time, Finney’s success in Rochester and other areas was enhanced by:

1. Encouraging the immediate reception of new converts as members in churches.

2. Conducting protracted meetings [revival services] over a period of days or weeks.

3. Allowing women to pray and exhort during church services.

4. Utilizing women’s prayer groups to capitalize on existing social networks for evangelism.

5. During his sermons those who felt the conviction of sin and their need of a Savior were invited to come to the front to sit in the pews reserved for them. This pew was called the “anxious seat.” Others have termed this the “mourners’ bench.”

6. He would pray for people publicly by name.

REVIVALS SPREAD IN NEW YORK

►The New York revivals spread from one church to another, and from one town to another.

►These small churches, in towns with very low populations, were frequently reporting conversions in the amounts of 50, 107, 140, 200, 250, 300, etc.

THE RESULTS OF REVIVAL

►Many taverns closed because of a lack of customers.

►Theatres were known to shut down because few would frequent them. (Theatres were considered sinful places of amusement.)

►The District Attorney stated that after the revival in Rochester, NY, the crime rate dropped by two-thirds and remained that way for years.

►Hundreds of thousands became members of the churches.

REVIVAL BECAME WIDESPREAD

Though the revival in upstate New York was astounding in itself, it was typical of what was taking place throughout the nation at that time. This era is known as the Second Great Awakening (1790 – 1840).

That deep work of the Spirit continues now across the world. Its expressions vary with different cultures and denominational traditions. However, the divine Spirit deeply impacts those who continue to seek the Lord. It is time for repentance revival in the nations and My prayer is that we may join together in agreement and believe God is about to do a powerful work in your nation also.

PRAYERS FOR TODAY'S FASTING PROGRAM

Let us pray saints:

1. Lord, let us know you more in our personal relationship, so we may comfort others in Jesus Mighty Name.

2. Lord help us to in unity with those around us, by the bond of Your Spirit in Jesus Mighty Name!

3. Lord we ask through the name of Your Son Jesus that you destroy every work of the devil delaying the fire of repentance revival coming to our lives in Jesus mighty name!

4. Pray that God will reveal His requirements for genuine revival in your life, family, church, community, and nation. Ask God to start that revival in your own heart and life that repentance revival will flow.

5. Ask God what He wants you to do today to apply what He has revealed to you and run with it. What actions will you take after this fasting day?

6. Pray for an alertness and an awakening from spiritual slumber, do that you may be ablaze. Ask the Lord to awaken the remnant body of Christ and draw more saints into the Body of Christ.

7. Declare readiness over God’s people for radical change that will come from a powerful move of God!

8. Decree that lives are being characterised by an increasing hunger for a new move of God and experience Your healing power in Jesus mighty Name!

9. Ask God to do a fresh work within our heart this weekend, that just as you moved in Canada, that you will start with us today and do great things in Jesus Mighty Name!

10. May revival come to each of our homes and change family members to be on fire for God in Jesus Mighty Name!

11. Lord we pray for Pastor Robert’s Meeting in Johannesburg South Africa that has started today, may You come and visit Your people as You have promised in Jesus Mighty name!

12. Any principality in the heavenlies delaying your progress and Gods messengers be removed in Jesus mighty name!

13. Any agent of satanic delay in my (office, home, school, place of work, city, and nation), withholding my promotion/graduation, revival may they be completely removed and rendered powerless in the mighty name of Jesus!

14. Father we ask that you please send angelic reinforcements from the 3rd heavens to release our blessings and arrest all demonic hinderances in the 2nd heavens, in the mighty name of Jesus!

15. Father for my shame, troubles, and delay, I shall receive double honour, in the mighty name of Jesus!

16. I refuse to give up until my testimony gives birth to many other testimonies and revival comes to my home, church, city, and nation, in the mighty name of Jesus!

17. Lord let your Holy Spirit fire fall upon each person's home today to stir revival in the hearts of Your remnant in Jesus Mighty Name!
